From School Counselor to Road Wanderer: The Journey to My New Adventure

ree

For the past 14 years, I poured my heart into being a school counselor. Day after day, I drove my long commute into Salt Lake, supporting students through their struggles, celebrating their victories, and reminding them that their dreams mattered. Along the way, I also worked hard to earn my degree in educational leadership—maybe one day I’d even become a school principal.

But somewhere on those daily drives, a different dream kept whispering to me. I’d imagine what it would be like to keep driving past the school, past the office, past all the responsibilities, and just keep going—to the mountains, the coast, a new city, or anywhere my curiosity pulled me. That longing to travel never left.

For years, I’d tell my coworkers, friends, and family about my “someday” dream: moving to Europe. I applied to countless jobs overseas, but the doors never seemed to open. At first, I felt like I had failed. Yet with time, I realized something important: the dream wasn’t dead, it was simply changing shape. Instead of waiting for the perfect opportunity abroad, I began to see how I could take control of my own adventure right here at home.

So, at one of our counselor meetings, I finally said it out loud: I’m going to buy an RV, get my travel agent license, and quit my job.

Everyone laughed it off at first. “You won’t really do it,” they said. After all, I had great relationships with my students and coworkers, and I was deeply invested in my school. But deep down, I knew this was the next step for me. I had spent so many years encouraging students to chase their goals; it was time for me to do the same.

And so the plan came alive.

  • February: I went to the RV show.

  • March: I started meeting with sellers.

  • April: I found her, the RV that would carry me forward.

  • May: She was mine—purchased, registered, ready.

  • June: I wrapped up summer school to boost my savings and rented out my house.

  • July 18: I hit the road.

Now here I am, me and my dogs traveling across the United States in my RV, discovering hidden gems, exploring new destinations, and collecting stories along the way. What started as a daydream in the car has become my life.

This adventure isn’t just about me, though—it’s about sharing what I learn with others. On my travel site, you’ll find my stories, insider tips, and curated itineraries. You can ask questions, book your own trips, or even join me on group events across the country. My goal is simple: to make travel more accessible, more memorable, and more meaningful for anyone with the same itch for adventure.

I still dream of Europe. That journey will come in time. But for now, I’m embracing this chapter—life on the road, in an RV, building a business that reflects who I am and what I love.

Because if I’ve learned anything over these past few years, it’s this: the road to your dreams isn’t always straight. Sometimes it takes a few detours, but every mile gets you closer to where you’re meant to be.
